Fishing Rules 2010 Season

Species Season
Salmon and Sea Trout: 1st of Feb – 31st of Oct
Brown Trout : 15th of Mar – 6th of Oct

NO SUNDAY FISHING ON BEAT 1

Not allowed:

  • Fishing with set lines in any form.
  • Bait fishing before 1st June and after 26th August. The use of live vertebrates as baits, prawn or shrimp baits at anytime, bait digging on or near the river bank and the use of Gaffs, Tailers or Knotted Landing Nets. Lead core or fast sinking line, multi-treble hooked lures or more than one baited hook. All fish hooked behind the gill line to be returned to the water immediately.
  • Fishing at The Waterfall or interfering with the Salmon Ladders.
  • Fishing at one point when others are waiting to fish. Move 1m downstream between each cast .
  • Dogs with anglers, fires to be lit.
  • (Day permits Beat 1 only) Cross beyond the main river flow to fish.
  • The removal of natural stone from the river banks or bed and the making of croys or other structures.

All Anglers must:

  • (Day permits Beat 1 only) Limited to take only one Salmon, two Sea Trout and two Brown Trout per permit. Fish from the Right Bank only from downstream of the Old Cramond Brig. Angler should not cross beyond the main river flow to fish.

(Day permits Beat 3 only) Limited to take only one Salmon, two Sea Trout and two Brown Trout per permit. Fish Both Banks from Niddry Burn downstream to the Turnhouse Railway Bridge.

  • Whilst fishing, carry and produce a valid permit when asked by a Committee Member or an authorised bailiff on demand.
  • (Season Permits Only) Access downstream Both Banks to The Ford, then Right Bank only from The Ford to the Old Bridge at Craigiehall Barracks. Then Both Banks from 350 metres downstream from the Bridge, until the Old Cramond Brig, then Right Bank only downstream.  Access is strictly forbidden at Craigiehall Barracks, Cobble Cottage, The Waterfall and the Ferryman’s Cottage.
  • (Season Permits Only) May not take more than 2 Salmon per season.
  • Return all Sea Trout under 12″ (300mm) and over 20″ (500mm), All Salmon under 12″ (300mm) and Brown Trout under 9″ (225mm)have to be returned to the water immediately.
  • Return all Salmon Parr, Smolts, Kelts, Red or Unclean fish have to be returned to the water immediately.
  • Holders must record all catches on the catch return section of your Day permit at the end of the day and lodge the return with the Treasurer. Season permit holders report catches to Club Treasurer using the annual catch return document.  Failure to do so will result in permit withdrawal for next season. Season permit holders must make their catch return by the due date, 14th November, all returned fish with their details and nil returns are required. Offenders will be unable to buy a permit the following year or will have it withdrawn if purchased.
  • Fish according to law, incorporating The Forth District Salmon Fishery Board’s regulations. It is illegal to sell or offer for sale any rod caught salmon. A conviction under the Salmon Acts will mean an automatic withdrawal of any current permit with a minimum ban of 5 seasons.  Permits are non-transferable.

Any abuse to Committee members, Club members or bailiffs will result in a permit withdrawal on-the-spot.

Please be aware that river banks are hazardous. Stay clear of undercut banks.

Please consider others and observe THE ANGLERS CODE OF CONDUCT and THE FORTH DISTRICT SALMON FISHERY BOARD CODE OF PRACTICE.

  • Always wait your turn to fish a pool from its head
  • Always remove your old line, cans, bottles and all litter from the river bank
  • Always stay about 15m from the next angler and 30m when they or you are using a fly
  • Always move one pace after each cast whilst fishing down a pool or glide.
  • Always respect the property, access and privacy of people who live on or by the river

It is recommended that all children under the age of 14 are supervised at all times. All members and third parties who are Granted permission to fish by the Club will do so at their own responsibility for loss, damage or injury.

Please help to conserve spring salmon stocks (Feb, Mar, Apr & May), by returning unharmed all fish, use barbless hooks during catch and release periods. Please return all coloured salmon and sea trout after 26th August.  Please return all hen fish in October.

Club Members Only – No Day Tickets

 Cramond Angling Club is pleased to announce that Sunday Fishing is permitted for Brown Trout Only (Introduced in 2008)
The following rules apply:

1.    FLY FISHING FOR BROWN TROUT ONLY

2.    Sunday fishing is allowed upstream of the Old Cramond Brig to the upper limit of Beat Three. No Sunday fishing downstream of Old Cramond Brig.

3.    No other fish may be taken. Any salmon, sea-trout, or other fish caught inadvertently must be returned to the water immediately.

4.    A Leader of no more than 4lb maximum breaking strength can be used.

5.    Any brown trout under 9 inches (228mm) in length must be returned to the water immediately.

6.    Members may be asked for their Permit, and an inspection of their fishing equipment should demonstrate their intention of fishing to the Sunday rules.

Any ticket holder infringing any of the Fishing Rules and Regulations or who may be or has been convicted of illegal fishing and fails to disclose the matter or any offence under the Acts relative to Salmon or Trout fishing shall forfeit his/her permit with all the privileges carried by it. Suspension or forfeiture of an angler’s permit may result if an angler acts in an unreasonable, aggressive or inappropriate way to authorised Bailiffs or Committee members or other anglers.

Such forfeiture or suspension shall be subject to a Committee enquiry at which the member may appeal and shall be advised of the result of the enquiry by a letter under the hand of the Secretary of the Club directed to the permit holder at the address stated on his/her permit application.
