The river has dropped a fair bit and hopefully we will be fishable for Wednesday. All the paths have been cleared on the riverbank and we look well prepared for the start of the season. For those interested there is a new E-zine called East-sleep-Fish which has an article on the river Almond in this months issue The e-zine can be viewed here.
Applications for new members will be accepted from Feb 1st and all details are on the permits page.I have also been asked to mention that Mark MCGilvary will be selling some of his top quality flies at the flytying evening on Tuesday 13th Feb, with all proceeds going to Yorkhill Hospital, a very worthwhile cause. Good luck to anyone venturing out on the river this week.

With the recent high winds we have been relatively lucky with very little storm damage. The vast majority of trees that have come down are not really affecting the river and those that were blocking the paths we use have been dealt with.

bank erosion at Willow island has enabled the river to now flow freely past both sides. This has prevented erosion on the path side but unfortunately wiped out the Sandmartins nests on the far bank

Not long now untill the season starts on our river. The opening day ceremony will take the same format as last year with a bbq at the “Wall Pool” on Monday 1st of February the start will be 9am. Season Tickets will not be sold on the day

Members only fly tying evening hosted by Paul Buchanan

we have been working on putting on a fly tying evening in February and we have been fortunate to acquire Pauls time to do the demo’s Paul as many of you know is an expert on the Almond and has represented the Scottish National River Team. His Almond patterns work. This is an ideal opportunity for all to gain that little bit more knowledge.Paul is also going to donate some tying kit to our junior tyers and therefore this is an ideal opportunity for all members.
The date has been booked for Monday 13th of Feb at Cramond boat club with a 7.30pm start

The agenda will be along the following lines…………

30 minute intro
French nymph technique – show the rig and indicator and the flies that are used (10 mins max)
Straight nymph technique – demonstrate the difference between this and French (5 mins max)
Nymphs on jig hooks – why they are so effective (5 mins max)

I am sure you will all agree there is something for everyone here. Paul is also an extremely approachable chap and will readily answer any fishing related questions you may have for him.

January 2012

January 6th, 2012

Only a month to go until the Salmon season starts We will be having our annual opening day ceremony at the wall pool on the 1st of Feb. Details will be posted at a later date but I imagine the format will be very similar to last year. Please note that season tickets will not be sold on the day.
Although the season ended on the 31st of October last year time has not stood still with regards to work on the river. We have been doing some survey work on the feeder burns namely the Bughtlin,Niddry,Gogar and Broxburn and in most cases problems regarding barriers to spawning fish removed. the never-ending task of clearing the 2 fish ladders has also been taking place along with opening up paths which suffered due to fallen trees. Some sections of bt 2 were also cleared of some “tippet trashers” and hopefully the improvements will be noticed

It may be worthwhile to view the new rules for season 2012 which can be viewed here The main changes being; Mandatory catch and release for Salmon,Sea Trout and Brown Trout and the use of treble hooks in any form forbidden

Now that the season is about to start the journal should be updated on a weekly basis until the start of the season when it will revert back to river and catch reports as we get them Please feel free to tell us of your sucesses by contacting us via the contacts page on this website

Special offer to members Monomaster only £3.00

November 29th, 2011

Many members of the CAC have recognised that discarded nylon along the banks of the river is a problem. Members of the public have also reported large and small amounts of nylon being found along the river banks. Clearly this is an environmental problem, that the club needs to do its best to resolve.

There is a small device called a Monomaster which some of the club members already use and have found it to be simple and effective in use. Details can be found here Monomaster

The club has been in touch with Phil Holding of Monomaster who has very kindly agreed to supply these to CAC members at a vastly reduced price. Depending on where you go, you will be charged between £7.95 and £10.95 but thanks to the generosity of Phil we are able to offer these to club members at only £3 each!!!!

We are very keen that as many people as possible take advantage of this great offer. The river and its wildlife is something we all love and appreciate and must do what we can to protect.

To order your monomaster please contact any member of the admin team on the following page
Contacts

The committee is happy to support this initiative and are very grateful to Phil from Monomaster for his support. We hope as many members of the club get behind this and support it.

Remember, only £3 each they make an excellent Christmas present.

Well done to Paul for getting his first Salmon on Wednesday and yet another for the “old Hand” John.
The fish should continue to run until the season ends on October 31st

Last Saturday saw the final outing of the season to Tweed at Lower Caberston and as ever was another successful event. The outings have been well attended this year and our thanks go to Adam Cross for doing the “spadework” Due to demand he is possibly going to add another two events next season so get your names in as early as possible to avoid disappointment when they are announced.

Not long to go now until the river closes for the season(31st of October) and there is still a very good chance of landing a Salmon …..Good luck to everyone venturing out

Week-Ending Saturday 8th October 2010

October 8th, 2011

Thursday saw the close of the Brown trout season and by all accounts we have had a good season There were no reports of fish caught this week but that does not mean the river did not produce a result. There are still 3 weeks left of the Salmon/Sea trout season and hopefully we will get some reports as to how the river is fishing in the next couple of weeks.October traditionally is a month where members often venture to different rivers in search of Salmon with the Tweed,Tay,Teith,Dee,Forth and Spey amongst others being the venues of choice.

C.A.C members on the Tweed at Lower Caberston

Verbal reports show that our members on the whole are having a modicum of success on these trips and hopefully this will be repeated in the final 3 weeks of the season on our river.
Representatives of the F.D.S.F.B and Cramomd Angling Club had a meeting on the river last week with the Wildlife Officer from Lothian and Borders police. The meeting was intended to inform the officer of any issues we have on the river.A commitment was made to more frequent visits to the river by Lothian and Borders police next season. Good news indeed for both the club members and local community.
With the A.G.M next month(November 21st 7.45pm Cramond Boat Club) time is now of the essence for any proposals to be sent to the Secretary for same. The forms have to be received by November 1st.
End of season catch returns are required to be sent to the Treasurer by November 14th

Good luck to anyone heading out next week

Week-Ending Saturday 1st October 2011

October 2nd, 2011

Slightly different this week with the successes of last week by all accounts being difficult to replicate.
This was possibly due to lower river levels even though we did have high tides.By Wednesday the river was not hat far off summer level and Thursday and Fridays “heatwave” did not help matters.
All seems quite on the Brown Trout front with few reports of successes. The exception being one members first foray up to bt.3 which produced a couple of Browns and a Sea Trout.

With rain forecast on Sunday the river should get a welcome freshen up.
Thursday sees the end of the Brown Trout season and therefore the end of Sunday fishing for members until March next year.

Good luck to all heading out next week

Dates for the diary Nov 14th 2011 Catch returns must be with the treasurer by this date
