Fish species of the River


Atlantic Salmon - lives in fresh water for one to four years before the migration to the North Atlantic to grow for another few years. Atlantic Salmon will returns to its native river to spawn. Catch number of Salmon on the Almond is really low and catch and release is highly encouraged. They will enter the Almond all year round but best times for fishing are around October.

The most popular method of fishing for salmon is using the spinner. Although there has been a small number of fish caught using fly fishing method. River Almond is blessed with all types of water features from fast flowing to a deep pool that will suit both fly fishing and spinning.

Sea Trout - Sea Trout and Brown Trout are from the same species, distinguished mainly by the fact that Brown Trout lives mainly in the fresh water. Sea trout are very similar to the Atlantic Salmon in the way they migrate to the sea and then return to the fresh water to spawn. They can be found all year round in the Almond.

Methods for sea trout fishing are very similar to the salmon fishing. In fact, same tackle can be used for both species. Large (up to 8.5 lbs) sea trout have been caught from the Almond every year, but the average size of sea trout will be around a pound.

Brown Trout - Can be caught in most parts of the Almond. The stretch of the club water between Cramond Brig and the Waterfall Pool are known to fish well.
